About Mark Fielding
Born in London in 1961, Mark visited the West Country from an early age. But it was his three years at Exeter University that consolidated his love of the region and in particular a year living on the Exe estuary.
In 1994 he and his family moved to Cornwall. In 1998 he was introduced to Robert Lenkiewicz, who agreed to teach him. The two years he spent as a pupil had a lasting impact on Mark’s work.
In 2005, Mark decided to paint dancers, his first efforts were so rewarding that this subject is now central to his output. He is currently working with ballet and Argentine Tango dancers, exhibiting widely in the dance fraternity and recently exhibited at the London Tango Festival. His thoughts on Tango have recently been published in Tango Notebook in the USA.
Mark is constantly drawn to the sea. He has embarked on a project to portray the Tamar and Lynher river where he lives. He was recently inspired by the visits of Turner to the area and exhibited some of his work at the Plymouth Art Gallery and Museum as a response to a major Turner exhibition at the Gallery last summer. He has also returned to the Exe where he lived 25 years ago to capture the changing tides and light.
Mark also carries out Portrait commissions on an international basis. He relishes the opportunity to capture the spark of life in the sitter.
Mark exhibits widely throughout the South West and beyond. He was selected for the South West Academy Summer Open Exhibition at the Royal Albert Memorial museum, Exeter in 2003 and 2004. He plans to publish a book based on the conversations he had with Robert Lenkiewicz in the near future.
